Impact of Covid19 on Agricultural Market Players

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in unprecedented global public health and economic crises. The effect of the pandemic has been felt by all key stakeholders, most especially the private sector as it has continued to impact on their business operations. This study specifically takes a snap shot of the effect of the pandemic on the private sector operating in the agricultural sector.

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in unprecedented global public health and economic crises. At the time of this publication, an estimated 4.7million1 cases had been recorded with a 6.7% death rate. Africa is currently contributing about 1.25%2 to the total global cases.
Zambia has not been spared by the pandemic as the number of cases keep on fluctuating to an accumulative total of 866 by 21st May, 2020 (ZNPHI, 2020). Musika is cognisant of the potential effects that the pandemic might have on both the operations of the private players and the smallholder farmers. It is against this background that Musika undertook this study to generate evidence to inform its approach going forward on how best to intervene.
